What Are Steel Shop Drawings and Why Do Fabricators Need Them?

Structural drawings tell the project team what the engineer intends. Steel shop drawings tell the fabricator how to build it. That difference matters because the shop needs member marks, dimensions, hole locations, weld notes, bolt information, material sizes, plate details, and clear references that can be checked before cutting or drilling begins.
A strong shop drawing package also connects to erection drawings. The shop and field teams need to understand how pieces are marked, shipped, staged, lifted, and connected. Without that clarity, small detailing gaps become RFIs, field questions, or rework.
